How To Manage: Heartburn / Acid Reflux

Acid reflux or heartburn occurs in around 4% of semaglutide [e.g. Wegovy and Ozempic] patients who participated in clinical trials. This is due to the medication slowing down the emptying of your stomach, which can lead to food staying in your stomach for longer and causing acid reflux. The feeling of fullness might happen after a small meal, an overly full sensation after a regular meal, or even at times unrelated to eating.

Here are some tips to help alleviate your reflux or indigestion:

  1. Meal and snack pattern
Have three regular meals along with 1-2 snacks.
  2. Mindful eating
Eat slowly and take breaks during meals.
  3. Fluid intake
Avoid consuming large amounts of fluids around mealtime, just before exercising, or right before bed.
  4. Food choices
Steer clear of fatty foods, spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, garlic, coffee, tea, chocolate, carbonated drinks, and alcohol.
  5. Posture after eating
    Stay upright after eating.
When sleeping, elevate your head slightly or lie on your left side.
  6. Sleep comfort
If symptoms trouble you while lying down, consider using an extra pillow while sleeping.
